A leisurely walk of about 10 minutes ( or a ride with the Shire Horse and carriage ), will take you down into the heart of the village of Polperro, a picturesque, historical, fishing village which is steeped in history and well known for its smuggling, narrow streets and small quaint shops, not to mention the excellent restaurants and pubs.
For hikers, ramblers, and all visitors, The Cottles is situated close to the superb coastal path, with walks along the cliff paths, and breath-taking views of the rugged coast line and Polperro’s quaint, harbour and fishing port.
For those who have the energy, a walk westwards to Lantivet Bay ( 3 ½ miles – 5 ½ km ) or eastwards to Looe ( 4 ½ miles – 7 ¼ km ) is well worth the effort.
Polperro is well known as a smuggling haven, which dates back for hundreds of years, with it’s narrow streets, small quaint shops, and numerous excellent restaurants and pubs.
You can visit the museum of smuggling in the heart of the village and find out about the route that the smugglers used to take. Indeed, part of the route that was taken is Longcoombe Lane, where The Cottles is situated.
Polperro harbour remains a working fishing port, and at high tide you can watch the local boats unload their daily catch and take it to the fish quay on the inner harbour.
Fishing excursions can be taken from the quay at Polperro, as well as boat trips to Looe and Polruan.
